Nanotechnology in Wood Creates Thermal House
22 March 2007A Nanotechnology discovery that can alter the material properties of wood has powerful environmental implications. Wood, of course, is prevalent in housing construction, and the ability to manufacture cleaner wood with thermal properties can enable houses to retain their energy longer, reducing fuel costs and pollution. Proponents claim that this breakthrough in Nanotechnology can even slow global warming.
The breakthrough technology has been named one of the top 25 Inventions of 2007, in an upcoming science convention in San Jose. Inventions nominated as finalists for the convention had to satisfy three criteria. They had to qualify as a true breakthrough in technology, they had to demonstrate cleverness and they had to show some historical significance. Winning inventions will be announced on May 11th, but it’s easy to see why this new thermal wood breakthrough should be among the contenders.
Dubbed The Enertia Building System and invented by Michael Sykes, it uses Nanotechnology to convert common household wood into a thermal battery. This is accomplished by injecting Zeolitic crystals into the wood, thus changing its molecular structure at the Nano-scale. No visible changes take place in the wood, but fundamentally it begins to function as a solar cell. Thus, a house built with this kind of wood can be adapted to heat and cool itself.
Already, prototype homes with this Nanotechnology-enhanced wood are being developed to optimize the thermal potential of the wood while not sacrificing the appearance of the house in any way. The added ability to reduce carbon pollution from reduced burning of fossil fuels also makes the wood environmentally friendly as well.
