New nanomaterial that could help in producing energy
13 September 2008The major disadvantage of solar cell is that they only work during day light and therefore for minimizing their use for generating energy, an attempt have been made by researchers a Boston University. Researchers fabricated and used nanonets to split water into its basic constituents hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen can be stored and later it can be used as fuel during day or night.
A new cheap nano-structured material could act as catalyst for splitting water. The researchers grew two-dimensional branching titanium and silicon structures. Although Max Plank Institute, Germany, has earlier carried out a similar research, however researchers at Boston University increased the surface area of titanium disilicide so that the performance of the nanomaterial could be enhanced.
The research finding is published in the journal, “Angewandte Chemie,”, where detailed procedure for synthesis of nanonets is described. The researchers grew 15 nanometer thick nanonets and found that it is 10 times more electrically conductive than the bulk form. As electrical conductivity is the major property, it’s higher value indicate that it could be used as water splitting catalyst.
