European Commission of Nanotechnologies focuses on legislation & safety

Nanotechnologies can provide enormous benefits to the manufacturing industry, information industry, transport, electronics, health, energy and space industries. nanotechnology based applications are already in use in many areas and it is expected that within the next eight to ten years, nanotechnology will provide explosive economic growth. Nanotechnology has already created so many innovations in some major industrial segments and scientists are looking for possibilities in other areas also.

Many analysts and researchers see the total nanotechnology market will reach up to 2000 billion Euros in the next eight to ten years and at the same time nanotechnology has a potential to create large number of jobs. According to an estimate in the next six to eight years, there will be approximately 10 million nano-related jobs in the sector.

Although the current EU has already made some legislation regarding to health and safety issues associated with the use of nanomaterials, however the commission thinks that there is need of further research in this area.

The commission’s VP Gunter Verheuge, who is also responsible for industry policy thinks that there is a need of reliable and stable regulatory framework. The framework will boost innovation so that nanotechnology is fully exploited to achieve desired growth and employments.
