Nanotechnology Boom for Medical Industry
10 May 2007A new study entitled “Nanotechnology in Healthcare” predicts an explosive demand for healthcare-related Nanotechnology products over the next ten years: from $53 billion in 2011 to $110 billion in 2016. The report detailing these findings is produced by the Cleveland-based research firm The Freedonia Group, Inc. The report claims that demand for everything from Nanomedicines to medical supplies will keep investment dollars flowing to market.
The medical field stands to reap tremendous gains from advances in Nanotechnology. Pharmaceutical companies will produce the first batch of Nanomedicines that use Nanotechnology to administer treatments at the molecular level, using Nanopolymers and Nanoproteins as delivery mechanisms. From there everything from cancer to neurological disorders will benefit from further medical applications.
The medical field will also witness Nanotechnology bring about a dramatic transformation in medical diagnostic products. DNA probes will deliver unsurpassed performance as diagnostic and drug delivery tools. Nanotechnology can also enhance imaging technologies as well.
For example, Nanomaterials made of unique metal and polymer compounds will improve upon the results garnered from in vivo imaging. Nanomaterials are already in use for bone and dental restoration, and their application to imaging applications is not far off. Eventually, Nanoimplants will be used in wider settings, such as tissue and neuron regeneration. Ultimately, Nanotechnology will extend beyond therapies into the area of preventative medicine, where it stands to deliver its greatest overall benefit.
