Nanotechnology can be used for treating breast and prostate cancer
26 October 2008According to physicist Diandra Leslie-Pelecky, prostate and breast cancer cells are very close to skin and if treated with magnetic cancer fighting drugs, we can avoid the spread of the cancer drug to entire body. The former professor at University of Nebraska-Licoln, Leslie-Pelecky brought an award for $84,000 from the National Institute of Health recently.
Dr. Vinod Labhasetwar of the department of biomedical engineering and former professor Diandra Leslie-Pelecky have tried to treat tumor with iron oxide treated magnetic nanoparticle (MNPs) and using magnet from outside of the body. Although researchers believe that majority of the work has been completed, however a few roadblocks are still there and these are being examined.
One of the major roadblock is to make more magnetic nanoparticle and understanding of the subject will lead to develop strong magnetic nanoparticles. Using strong magnetic nanoparticles will ensure that the drug carried by these nanoparticles will stay at the desired place and will not carried away by the blood, once a magnetic field is applied from the magnet kept outside of the skin.
The other challenge before researchers is to study the harmful effect if any the strong magnetic nanoparticle can cause. Although study has been carried out on these magnetic nanoparticles, however the initial studies show that these do not cause any change in liver hormones and therefore are safe and can be used.
