Nanotechnology Promises Bone Cell Regeneration

31 March 2007

Millions of people around the world suffer from degenerative bone disease, a condition which can is often remedied by surgical grafts and implants. Currently, however, the European Nanobiocom project is exploring ways to use Nanotechnology to regenerate and repair bone tissue.

Ultimately the aim of the commission is to develop a workable replacement for bone tissue that can perform the same functions as healthy tissue. There is a tricky balance that takes place here. On the one hand, seriously advanced stages of bone tissue degeneration require a substitute to completely duplicate both the structural and physiological properties of the tissue. Implants must work efficiently, all the while enabling the patient to continue carrying on their usual routine with minimal discomfort.

Researchers aim to use Nanotechnology to create ‘smart’ material that will assist in the repair and regeneration of cellular tissue in the bone. This is no small task. The material has to act on the genes in the cells while responding well to internal as well as environmental stresses. The material must also adapt itself well to the size and shape characteristics of healthy bones. The research team heavily focuses on the use of Nanoparticles to accomplish these aims. Creating Nano-enabled smart tissue for bone tissue replacement is a tremendous challenge, but researchers believe that Nanotechnology holds the key for delivering successful results.
