New alternate technique equivalent of chemotherapy developed
18 July 2008Brain tumor is one of the largest threats especially in young children suffering from the disease. Although chemotherapy is very effective in treating tumor, however it has many side effects as it can damage the healthy brain cells.
Recently the researchers at Wooly Lab have developed polymeric nanoparticles. These nanoparticles are able to hold doxorubicin, which is used for treating pediatric brain tumor through chemotherapy. Researchers were able to control the drug release through the designing of the polymer.
Although the researchers were able to release through drug in a designed way, however the entire drug was not released. Therefore the drug was not as effective as neat drug. Researchers are now targeting functional group based nanoparticles so that they can extend release of drug through the new technique.
The cell studies are being carried out in the School of Medicine at Washington University. Through a physical process called enhanced permeability and retention effect, nanoparticles having specific ligands will be able to target the tumors. As the amount of drug released through nanoparticles will be sufficient enough to kill cancer cell and at the same time it will have less side effects.
