Researchers used hard drive technology for cancer cell detection
28 December 2008Stanford University researchers have used nanotechnology for detecting cancer markers in the blood stream at an early stage so that the disease can easily and successfully be treated. The technology, although it is in a prototype stage only can detect cancer markers in less than one hour.
The nanotechnology was similar that is used for reading and writing hard drives and with the help of a chip and reader, it is possible to find multiple biomarkers in much less concentration. A silicon having 64 embedded sensors is quite capable to sense change in magnetic field, due to the cancer cells attached to magnetic nanoparticles and therefore whenever the hand held device detects magnetic particles, it find a cancer marker.
In comparison to the conventional electrical charged scanners, use of magnetic field is quite effective in achieving the result. Since magnetism is rarely found in human systems, the tagging of magnetic nanoparticles to cancer tissues is best way to locate and identify cancer tissues in presence of an external magnetic field.
Researchers at Stanford University are working hard to find the use of nanotechnology for investigation and chemotherapy. Researchers are finding all possible ways to deliver the drug at the desired cancer cells without damaging the surrounding tissues. Scientists in other parts of the world are also working to find the best possible ways to fight cancer with the help of nanotechnology.
