Health concerns of nanoparticles raised by British scientists
16 November 2008Nanoparticles are now day used in manufacturing various products including cosmetics; electronic devices and even food items and scientists from all over the world including British scientists have raised their concerns about the health implications of these materials. These are the small particle having particle size in the range of 1 to 100 nm designed in such a way so that the properties of the materials are improved significantly over the bulk properties of the matter.
Recently British scientists have raised the health implications of these nanomaterials which are being used now a day in every products and the effect of these are more or less unknown to the entire scientific community. Researchers called for urgent detailed study of all the nanomaterials and outweigh the benefits and risk of using these materials in specific products.
The Royal commission on Environmental Pollution conducted a two-year study and the researchers admit that in this period, two little knowledge about the possible health and environmental impact of these nanomaterials was gathered.
Scientists believe that as nanomaterials are being used at faster pace and therefore the current testing and research facilities are inadequate to study the environmental and health impact of these nanomaterials. The chairman of the commission suggest that as the existing regulation as well as testing arrangements are inadequate and there is an urgent need for creating and conducting testing and research work on nanomaterials so that the health and environmental impact of these is suitably assessed. Â
