Carbon Nanotubes for electronic textile applications
2 December 2008Designing an electronic textile is one of the greatest challenges before the researchers. The existing electronic textiles are very bulky and uncomfortable and now researchers have designed a new electronic textile having high conductive carbon nanotubes.
Nicholas Kotov, professor of chemical engineering, University of Michigan have coated cotton thread with conductive carbon nanotubes and found that the resultant thread is lightweight and can easily be woven into fabrics. The sensitive sensors are much more efficient in carrying out routine functions and even for detecting human blood.
Researchers made the fabric by dipping cotton into a polymer and carbon nanotube solution and passing electric current into the solution. The electric current was higher than the previously conducted experiments used for making electronic fiber. Further the researchers put a LED (light emitting diode) into a circuit between two of the coated cotton threads and found that the electric current passing between the threads is sufficient enough to shine LED brightly.
Researchers at Michigan have first demonstrated the biosensing property of nanotube textile, however the nanotubes for chemical sensing property are being developed. Researchers demonstrated that nanotube textiles are able to detect human blood, however these fabrics are unable to respond to bovine albumin.
