China develop paper-thin loudspeaker

20 November 2008

Researchers in China claims that they were able to develop a paper-thin loudspeaker that can either be attached to clothing, walls, windows or even can be inserted into the ear. These paper-thin loudspeakers were made from transparent carbon nanotube films and the research claims is to be published in one of the coming ACS’ Nano Letters.

At present the loudspeakers are bulky and complex and by making these loudspeakers thinner and compact, these can be suitably used for new digital electronics devices and various other applications. Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) are already being used for various applications including transmission of sound and music. Researchers mounted a carbon nanotube film on two electrodes and found that the system works as a loudspeaker.

These loudspeakers produce excellent quality sound and being transparent and flexible can be mounted on a number of insulating surfaces including ceilings, pillars, flags, clothes, room walls etc. Further these carbon nanotube based loudspeakers for small area devices are also suitable for buzzers or earphones. This research will lead many more applications of carbon nanotubes.
