New Nano-optical lens developed
29 August 2008Researchers at Northeastern University have created a new optical lens, which is one of the shortest micro lens developed. The micro lens focuses infrared light beam to an identified spot just 12 micrometer away from the lens. This is one of the shortest focal length and the image produced by micro lens was sharp and little blurred.
Dr. Srinivas Sridhar, distinguished professor of Physics at Northeastern University and his team from University’s Electronic Material Research Institute led the research. The research can lead to new advances in light imaging techniques.
Using photonic crystal substrate into a multilayer semiconducting wafer and applying nano-engineering two-dimensional micro lens was created. The technique is very useful in creating ultra compact infrared optical components that can be integrated with existing technologies so that improved image quality is obtained.
