New Nanoclay developed by Iranian University
4 September 2008Researchers at Amir Kabir University of Technology, Iran have successfully developed new nanoclays. The toxicity of these nanoclays was minimized and therefore these products can be used for various medical applications.
Nanoclays are used in various industries such as polymer industry and medical industry, however as these are treated with toxic chemicals like alkyl ammonium or alkyl amines and therefore these are not suitable for medical applications including drug delivery carrier.
Kourosh Kabiri, the lead inventor and his research team from Amir Kabir University of Technology, Iran was able to modify the nanoclay, so the nanoclay can also be used for medical applications. The finding of the research was published in Iranian Polymer and according to the research; the non-toxic modified clay layer is present between two kitosan molecules.
The new modified clay is also helpful in producing polymer having improved mechanical permeability and thermal effects. The intralayer thickness was also increased to 12-25 angstroms, which help in improved properties of polymer.
