Polymer with nanoparticles for paint and packaging applications
26 November 2008Researchers at University of Warwick have devised a new cost effective method of layering silica based nanoparticles to polymer small particles and thus obtaining a high performance and versatile material, which can be used for various applications including packing and paint.
Dr. Stefan Bon of Chemistry Department of Warwick University has created a new polymerization process known as “soap free emulsion polymerization processâ€, which allows coating of around 25 nm size silica nanoparticles to the polymer colloids in water. It has been observed that the new polymer can be used as scratch resistant paint and it can also be modified or tuned to make packaging material.
Researchers further modified the silica based nanoparticle coated polymer and upon depositing another polymer layer on it, researchers found that it shows additional characteristics not present in the original polymer. The advantage of this new process is that it is cost effective and at the same time it significantly reduces the time required for creating the versatile material.
Another advantage of this process is that the output of the process is quite high. In comparison to the conventional multi step processes, where the maximum output is 10 percent, the output of the single step process is expected to be in the range of 40 to 45 percent.
