Promising areas of interest in Nanotechnology
8 March 2007Since the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope (Nobel Prize in 1986), the domain of the nano science and nanotechnology is continuously growing. Although the scope for nanotechnoloy is enormous, currently scientists have identified only a limited number of (only 9) nano areas in which the activities are very promising. Scientists have further divided these nine areas into three categories.
The first category is enabling technologies. The category enabling technologies consists of four nano areas; nanoprocessing, surface and their film nanostructure, modeling and design and combination material discovery. The activities in this category includes nanolithography, microfluids, NEMS, MEMS, scanning probe & beam microscopies, sensing, characterization, molecular design, system simulation, combined nanomaterial synthesis and multiscale characterization.
The second category is devices and manufacturing and it consists of the three areas; nanoelectronic devices and systems, bioprocessing Microsystems and modeling and energy environmental nanosystems. These areas cover more than ten popular activities including nanotube ransistors, organic and flexible electronics, lithography, bimolecular reaction engineering and sensing environmental, chem.-bio nanosystems for remediation.
Third and last category is material system and it consists two areas; nanophase material and nanoparticle synthesis applications. The major activities in these areas include development and research work on new materials, designer biomolecules, sensor elements & catalysis and biodecoration for nano assembly.
