Semiconductor Nanocrystals
21 April 2007The control in the chemical surface in any of the nanocrystalline structure depends on the fabrication device of the semiconductor nanocrystal. It has always been a desire to fabricate a nanomaterial that has a derivatized surface, however there are a few issues such as the chemical reactivity between the nanocrystal and another organic or inorganic group or the assembling methods to fabricate derivatized nanocrystal.
We have to find a suitable solution for above issues so that the functioning and integrity of semiconductor nanocrystals do not get disturbed. We can find out suitable inorganic, organic or mixture of organic and inorganic layer to get a derivatized surface so that the physical and chemical properties of semiconductor nanocrystals are enhanced. Various studies have been carried out using a number of surface passivators.
Researchers have established that the near band edge photoluminescence of the semiconductor can be enhanced by passivating the semiconductor surface by organic molecules such as amine, thiolates etc. There is another possibility of coating an inorganic layer of silica on the semiconductor nanocrystal. Bourgeat-Lemi and his team have used the approach of inorganic-organic hybrid colloid to grow silica shell on the core of SiOH functionalized polymer head.
The functionalization process of semiconductor nanocrystal is becoming more and more important and various processes are being explored to fabricate hybrid nanostructures. The basis process involves the interaction between molecules carrying the desired function group and the semiconductor nanocrystal surfaces.
